Writing a Will is often perceived as a daunting task, and my personal journey was no exception. It was a process filled with uncomfortable conversations, difficult decisions, and constant revisions. However, it was also a journey of learning and understanding the importance of simplicity and foresight in estate planning.
When my wife and I first decided to write our Will, we had no children. Our initial thought was to include extended family and friends as beneficiaries. This decision led to a complex Will with an extensive list of beneficiaries, some of whom were assigned as little as 2% of our estate. It was a well-intentioned but overly complicated approach to ensuring our assets would be distributed among those we cared about.
However, as time passed, we lost touch with some of these friends. We found ourselves in a situation where our Will was potentially allocating assets to people we no longer had a relationship with. This realisation was a wake-up call that prompted us to reassess our approach.
We decided to simplify our Will, focusing solely on our extended family. This decision made our Will more manageable and reflective of our current relationships. However, we overlooked one crucial aspect - the possibility of future children.
When we eventually had children, we found ourselves back at the drawing board. Our Will, once again, needed to be revised to accommodate our growing family. This was the third time we had to rewrite our Will, a testament to the importance of regular reviews and updates.
Our journey in Will writing is far from over. We are now considering incorporating Trusts into our estate planning to provide further protection for our assets and peace of mind for our family. I've previously written about the importance and benefits of Trusts, which you can read here
In conclusion, writing a Will is a journey, not a one-time event. It requires regular reviews, updates, and sometimes uncomfortable conversations. However, it's a crucial part of ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes and providing peace of mind for your loved ones. Remember, simplicity is key, and foresight is invaluable. Don't wait until it's too late. Start your Will writing journey today.
